Surf photographer, videographer or session filming: which one you want

A surf photographer or videographer gives you the best images of your best waves, while session filming gives you the whole hour on video so you can see how you actually surf, so book a photographer for a keepsake and session filming if you want to improve.

Hiring someone to photograph your surfing and hiring someone to film your session sound like the same thing, and they are sold side by side on every surf beach in Portugal. They are not the same: one is made to look good, the other is made to be useful. Here is the difference and how to pick.

What a surf photographer or videographer is for

A surf photographer waits for the best moment of the session and shoots it tight, from the angle that flatters you most. A surf videographer does the same with video, usually cutting the session down to a short clip of your best waves, often slowed down and set to music.

Both are good at what they do, and what they do is make you look good. You get a handful of great images, and the waves where you fell, missed the take-off or went straight to the beach are left out, because nobody wants them in a highlight reel.

What session filming is for

Session filming is the opposite brief. Someone stands on the beach for the whole hour and films every wave you try, from the side, wide enough to see your board, your feet and where you are looking. Nothing is cut and nothing is slowed down for effect.

The footage is not pretty, but it is honest, and that is the point. The missed waves and the falls are where most of the learning is, and they are exactly what a photographer leaves out.

How to choose between them

Booking session filming in Portugal

Marola books someone to film your session at Matosinhos in Porto, Baleal and Peniche, Ericeira, Costa da Caparica, Aljezur and Sagres. It costs €20 for a one-hour slot, you book at least 48 hours ahead, a filmer is confirmed within 24 hours, and you can cancel for free up to 48 hours before the session. Your card is held, not charged, until the filmer is confirmed.

What to do with the footage afterwards

Watch it in order, a few waves at a time, and pick one thing to change: how you paddle into the wave, your pop-up, your stance, or where you are looking. The surf video analysis guide walks through what good looks like at each stage. If you would rather have someone else review it, a coach can do it online from the same clips.

Frequently asked questions

Is session filming the same as hiring a surf photographer?

No. A surf photographer captures the best shot of your best wave, while session filming records the whole session from the side so you can study your technique, including the falls and missed waves where most of the learning is.

How much does it cost to get filmed surfing in Portugal?

Session filming through Marola costs €20 for a one-hour slot at Matosinhos, Baleal and Peniche, Ericeira, Costa da Caparica, Aljezur and Sagres, booked at least 48 hours ahead with free cancellation up to 48 hours before.

Should I book a surf photographer or a videographer?

A photographer if you want a still image to keep, a videographer if you want a short edited clip to share. If what you actually want is to surf better, session filming is the one that shows you what to change.

Can I use session footage for surf coaching?

Yes. Session footage is filmed side-on and uncut, which is what a coach needs to see your stance, timing and wave choice. Send the clips to your instructor, or to an online coach for remote video analysis.
