Portugal's coastline runs over 900km from the Spanish border to the Algarve, with a rentable board waiting at nearly every stop. Here are two road-trip routes (one classic week, one longer north-to-south odyssey) built around where the swell actually is.

Wave type: Multiple regions · Best season: Best Sep – May · Difficulty: All levels

The classic week: Porto → Peniche → Ericeira → Lisbon

Start in Porto (2 nights): check Matosinhos and Espinho, walkable/metro-accessible from the city, and use the extra time for a Ribeiro wine tour and the city's old town. Drive 2.5 hours south to Peniche and Baleal (3 nights), the widest range of swell exposures on the trip, plus Berlengas boat trips on a flat day. Continue 45 minutes south to Ericeira (2 nights): the World Surfing Reserve, six breaks in a walkable village. Finish in Lisbon (2 nights) for Carcavelos or a day trip to Costa da Caparica, plus a city stay to close the trip. Total: roughly 9 days, under 4 hours of driving spread across the whole route.

The south loop: Lisbon → Ericeira → Peniche → Nazaré → back

A tighter 5–6 day loop for a shorter trip, all within about 90 minutes of Lisbon airport. Base in Ericeira for 2–3 nights (day-trippable to Peniche, 45 minutes north), then push on to Nazaré for 1–2 nights: even if you're not surfing the famous big-wave break itself, the harbour-side beach breaks work on smaller days, and watching the swell hit the point (in season) is worth the detour alone. Loop back to Lisbon via the A8, or extend south to Sagres if you have another 3–4 days to spare.

The full odyssey: Porto to Sagres

For 2–3 weeks with a rental car, run the whole coast: Porto/Matosinhos → Viana do Castelo & Moledo (2 nights, budget a full day for the northern detour: it's out of the way but uncrowded) → Figueira da Foz (2 nights) → Nazaré (2 nights) → Peniche/Baleal (3 nights) → Ericeira (2 nights) → Lisbon/Carcavelos/Costa da Caparica (2 nights) → Arrifana & the Costa Vicentina (2 nights) → Sagres (3 nights) to finish at the southwestern tip of Europe. Expect 6–8 hours of driving total, easily split across the trip. This route touches nearly every guide on this site.

Planning tips for a Portugal surf trip

Frequently asked questions

How many days do you need for a surf trip in Portugal?

Around 9 days covers the classic Porto, Peniche, Ericeira and Lisbon route with under 4 hours of driving. A 5 to 6 day loop from Lisbon works for a shorter trip, and two to three weeks lets you drive the whole coast from Viana do Castelo to Sagres.

What is the best time of year for a Portugal surf trip?

September to November and March to April give the best mix across the whole coast: building swell, mild water and manageable crowds. If your trip overlaps the WSL contest in Peniche in October, book accommodation in Peniche and Ericeira early.

Should I bring my own surfboard on a Portugal road trip?

For a multi-stop road trip, renting locally at each stop is usually easier than checking a board in as luggage: airline board fees add up, and you can switch to the right board for each coast. Marola books partner shops in several of the towns on these routes.
