Surfing Lagos

Lagos is one of the easiest places in Portugal to learn to surf, with gentle waves at Meia Praia and Porto de Mós, the warmest water on the mainland, and the west-coast beaches near Aljezur under an hour away when the bay is flat.

Lagos is the Algarve's easygoing surf base: a long, sheltered bay with the warmest water in mainland Portugal, backed up by wilder west-coast beaches less than an hour away for the days the Atlantic wakes up.

Wave type: Beach breaks · Best season: Sep – Apr (most consistent); Jun – Sep (warmest water) · Difficulty: Beginner – Intermediate

The waves in Lagos

Meia Praia is the main event: a long, sandy, south-facing bay east of town that breaks gently on south swells, forgiving enough for a first-ever surf lesson and consistent enough to keep working most of the year. Porto de Mós, a smaller cove near the marina and Ponta da Piedade, picks up a bit more size and swell exposure and is popular with local surfers when Meia Praia is too soft. When the Algarve itself goes flat, the wild west-coast beaches around Aljezur (Arrifana, Amoreira, Monte Clérigo) are under an hour's drive and pick up far more swell.

Best surf conditions in Lagos

Meia Praia works best on S to SW swell with N to NE offshore winds; Porto de Mós handles a bit more W in the swell direction thanks to its more open aspect. Because the bay faces south rather than the prevailing west, Lagos is noticeably less consistent than Portugal's west coast, and the local afternoon sea breeze can turn choppy in summer. Mornings are more reliable. Water temperature is the country's warmest, climbing to 22–23°C in late summer and rarely dropping below 15°C even in winter.

Getting in the water in Lagos

Meia Praia has a flat, wide, sandy entry directly off the beachfront promenade, with parking along most of its length. Porto de Mós has a small clifftop car park with steps down to the sand. For the west-coast beaches near Aljezur you'll want a car: the drive along the N120 takes roughly 45 minutes and the beaches themselves have basic gravel parking.

Local tips for surfing in Lagos

Frequently asked questions

Is Lagos good for a surfing beginner?

Yes: Meia Praia is sandy, gentle and forgiving, exactly the kind of wave first-timers need, and the warm water means more time practising and less time shivering.

What's the best month to surf in Lagos?

Late September and October combine reliable south swell with water still warm from summer, arguably the sweet spot of the year.

Do I need a wetsuit in Lagos?

Less than elsewhere in Portugal. A spring suit or 2mm covers summer, and even winter rarely needs more than a 3/2mm given the mild water temperature.
