Surfing Figueira da Foz

Figueira da Foz has two very different waves: Buarcos, a gentle beach for beginners, and Cabedelo, one of Europe's longest rights, which works best on a clean W to NW swell between September and April.

One of Portugal's most underrated surf towns sits at the mouth of the Mondego river: home to Cabedelo, one of Europe's longest right-hand waves, and to Buarcos, a gentle, forgiving beach that's ideal for learning.

The waves in Figueira da Foz

Cabedelo, on the south side of the river mouth, is the headline act: a jetty-protected sandbank that, on the right swell, produces long, peeling rights running several hundred metres: one of the longest rights in Europe when it lines up. Buarcos, on the north side of town, is the gentler counterpart: soft, sandy, longer-period rights that are far more forgiving and well suited to longboards and improvers. In between, the town beach (Praia da Figueira) is more exposed but still rideable, and works as a backup when the wind is wrong for the other two.

Best surf conditions in Figueira da Foz

Cabedelo wants a clean W to NW swell of 1–2.5m with E to NE offshore winds to line the sandbank up properly. It's sandbank-dependent, so quality varies week to week. Buarcos is more forgiving of swell size and direction, staying rideable in smaller or messier conditions. Autumn through spring (October–March) brings the most consistent swell; summer is smaller but Buarcos in particular still delivers fun days. Water temperature runs similar to the rest of the Silver Coast, 14–19°C depending on season.

Getting in the water in Figueira da Foz

Cabedelo sits across the river mouth from Figueira town; most visitors reach it via the village of Gala and a short walk to the beach, or, in season, a small passenger ferry across the river. The jetty rocks nearby can be sharp underfoot. Booties are worth having. Buarcos has direct, easy beach access from the seafront promenade with a gently sloping, sandy entry: no scrambling required.

Local tips for surfing in Figueira da Foz

Surf events in Figueira da Foz

Every September, Praia do Cabedelo hosts Gliding Barnacles, a longboard, art, music and food festival that celebrates surfing as expression rather than competition (23–27 September in 2026). It's one of Portugal's most-loved surf gatherings, and it suits the wave: Cabedelo's long right and gentle Buarcos next door are made for logging. Bring or rent something with length. Confirm dates on the festival's official site.

Frequently asked questions

Is Figueira da Foz good for beginners?

Yes: Buarcos breaks softly over sand with long, forgiving rights, and the town has a relaxed local scene without the crowds of Peniche or Ericeira.

What is Cabedelo and how do I get there?

Cabedelo is the jetty-protected sandbank south of the Mondego river mouth, reached via the village of Gala or a seasonal passenger ferry from Figueira. On a clean W–NW swell it produces one of Europe's longest right-hand rides.

What's the best time of year to surf here?

October to March is most consistent, with the biggest, best-organised swells. Summer is smaller but Buarcos still works well for casual, forgiving sessions.
