The waves in Ericeira
Ribeira d'Ilhas is the best-known spot: a long, walling right-hander over a rocky reef that hosts the MEO Rip Curl Pro Portugal. Coxos is a heavy, ledgy right considered one of Europe's finest reef waves; it only works on solid NW swell and is for experts only. Pedra Branca and Cave offer more accessible options at mid-size swell. Foz do Lizandro is the town beach break, ideal for beginners and longboarders. Crazy Left is a hollow, fast left-hander that comes alive on big W swells.
Best surf conditions in Ericeira
NW to W groundswell from 1 to 3m with N to NE offshore winds. The coast faces west-northwest, making it well-exposed to Atlantic swell and well-protected from the dominant north wind. The best sessions run from autumn through spring; summer brings flatter conditions but warm water (20–22°C). Winter water drops to 14–16°C, so a 4/3mm wetsuit is needed from November onwards.
Getting in the water in Ericeira
Most spots are accessed directly from the clifftops via stone steps or footpaths. Ribeira d'Ilhas has a car park and a ramp down to the beach. Coxos requires a scramble down rocky ledges. Only attempt entry and exit when the surge is manageable. The reefs are generally not as sharp as tropical limestone but booties are recommended at Coxos and Pedra Branca.
Local tips for surfing in Ericeira
- Ericeira village is a whitewashed fishing town with excellent seafood restaurants on Rua Dr. Eduardo Burnay.
- The reserve status means local surf culture is protective of its breaks. Paddle out with respect and patience.
- Ribeira d'Ilhas has a café at the car park that serves coffee and pastel de nata. Essential.
- Rent boards and wetsuits from the many surf shops on Rua Prudêncio Franco da Trindade in the village.
- Lisbon is 45 minutes south on the A21, so it's easy to combine a surf trip with a city stay.
Parking and where to stay in Ericeira
Ribeira d'Ilhas has a paid car park right above the beach that fills by mid-morning on weekends in season. Arrive early or park in the village and walk down. Coxos has no formal parking; use the small pull-offs along the cliff road and don't block the access track. Most visitors base themselves in Ericeira village itself, a 5–10 minute drive or bike ride from every break, with guesthouses and surf-focused apartments clustered around Rua Mendes Leal and the seafront. Staying in the village also puts you within walking distance of restaurants and the pickup points most Marola owners use.
Board choice, hazards and crowds in Ericeira
Match your board to the season: a shortboard or performance fish handles Ribeira d'Ilhas and Pedra Branca from autumn through spring when the swell has real push; bring (or rent) a longer, more buoyant board for summer's smaller, softer days at Foz do Lizandro. The reef breaks are shallow at low tide, and urchins live in the cracks at Coxos and Pedra Branca, so booties are worth the extra bag space. A rip current can form near the river mouth at Foz do Lizandro after heavy rain. Crowds peak on weekend mornings and during the MEO Rip Curl Pro window (typically October); if Ribeira d'Ilhas looks packed, Pedra Branca or Foz do Lizandro are usually calmer alternatives nearby.
Surf events in Ericeira
Ericeira packs two events into the autumn. The Alto Pro Am (a retro, style-first contest with parties, film premieres and secondhand boards) runs in early September (1–7 September in 2026). Then the town hosts a WSL Challenger Series stop, usually at Ribeira d'Ilhas, in early October (6–12 October in 2026); the sponsor name shifts year to year, so search ‘Ericeira Challenger Series’. Both fill the reef with spectators. Foz do Lizandro and the beaches south of town are the calm alternative, and boards rent locally. Confirm dates on the official sites before travelling.

Yes for most of the year. A 3/2mm covers summer, but from November to April you'll want a 4/3mm as water temperature drops to 14–16°C.
